Tension or stress headaches are the most common type of headache experienced in the general population and although the causes are multiple, stress is one of the main culprits.  The symptoms of tension headaches can range from mild to completely debilitating and are often categorized as either “episodic” or “chronic”.  The quality of life for those impacted can be greatly impaired.

Symptoms

  • pain in the head (diffuse, mild, moderate)
  • tight band around the head
  • dull, aching pain
  • tenderness on the scalp, neck or shoulders

Prevention

The Mayo Clinic outlines that keeping  stress at bay will greatly reduce tension-type headaches.  Some of the suggestions that are given are:

  • Relaxation Techniques (meditation, yoga, tai chi, deep breathing)
  • Engaging in pleasurable activities (music, reading, sports, etc)
  • Regular Exercise
  • Good Nutrition and Hydration
  • Adequate sleep
  • Support
  • Time Management
  • Laughter
  • Breaking Bad Habits – ie. caffeine and alcohol
